Set up your Trezor wallet with care
A hardware wallet puts you in control of your digital assets and asks you to take responsibility for a few important security steps. This guide explains Trezor.io/Start and walks you through initial setup. Screens can vary by device and software version, so follow current instructions from the official source.
Before you begin
Set aside uninterrupted time and choose a private place. Gather your Trezor device, cable, and a computer or mobile device supported by the current official app. Use an up-to-date browser and operating system. Inspect the packaging and device; if anything seems altered, stop and contact support through the verified website.
Have paper and a pen ready for your recovery backup. Never photograph, type, or store those words in a notes app, cloud drive, or message. Anyone who obtains them may be able to control the wallet they restore.
Visit the official start page
Type trezor.io/start into your browser’s address bar and check its spelling and secure connection. Avoid sponsored results, unsolicited messages, unknown QR codes, and look-alike addresses. Bookmark the verified page so you can return to the right source.
Choose instructions for your device on the official page. Download Trezor Suite only through a link from that site, then follow its installation prompts. If using the web application, follow the official route. Avoid utilities sent by strangers or unexpected pop-ups.
Open the official Trezor start pageInstall and connect your device
Open the official application and connect your device. It may guide you through installing or updating firmware. Follow expected prompts and keep the device connected during an update. If an error appears, consult the official help center rather than instructions from an unsolicited caller or message.
Read the device display as well as the computer screen. Verify addresses and transactions on your device. If its details do not match your intent, cancel and investigate.
Create your wallet
For a first setup, choose to create a new wallet and follow the official application and device prompts. You may be asked to create and confirm a wallet backup. Take your time: this backup is the recovery path if your device is lost or damaged.
Restore only when you intentionally need access to an existing wallet. A backup belongs on the device during its secure recovery process; never enter it into a website, share it with support, or copy it to a computer. Stop if asked to reveal it elsewhere.
Write down your recovery backup
Your device will show recovery words or another supported backup format. Record each item in order on the supplied card or another durable offline medium. Check spelling and sequence against device prompts, then store the backup privately where it is protected from damage and casual access.
Never share the words with anyone claiming to be support or offering to “validate” your wallet. No setup helper needs to see them. Do not enter them into this guide or an online checker. Keep the backup private, but somewhere you can access if needed.
Your recovery words are the wallet. Anyone who knows them may be able to restore it elsewhere. Keep them offline and private, always.
Set a device PIN
If offered, choose a PIN that is difficult to guess and that you can remember without writing beside the device. Follow its display instructions; some interfaces randomize the entry layout. Keep the PIN separate from your backup. The PIN protects the device; the backup restores access if the device is unavailable.
Receive your first asset
Once setup is complete, add an account for an asset supported by your device and software. To receive funds, create an address and verify it on the device display. Compare the full address with the application, then share it only with the intended sender. Match the asset and network.
For a larger amount, consider a small test transfer and wait for confirmation. Fees and confirmation times vary. Malware can alter computer details, so verify the destination and network on your device before approving any outgoing transfer.
Keep your wallet safe over time
Store your device and backup separately. Install software or firmware updates only through the official application. Never approve an unfamiliar transaction; check the destination, asset, network, and amount on your device before confirming.
Be alert to urgency and impersonation. Do not give strangers control of your screen or disclose your backup in response to a surprise warning. Navigate to the official site independently for help. If your backup may be exposed, consult official guidance from a trusted device.
Your setup checklist
Before you finish, pause and review the essentials. These quick reminders make good long-term habits, not just setup steps.
I reached the setup instructions by entering the official address myself.
I installed the app only from the official website.
I recorded my recovery backup offline and checked its order.
I have never shared my recovery words or entered them online.
I verify important addresses and transaction details on my device.
